Fascinating information, Maja. Penguins are birds I do not think about regarding molting. It's interesting too that they go through a sort of two week fast during the process. I also did not know April 25th is World Penguin Day and great to know! Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I found that fascinating, too. They need to fast because they cannot go in the water for hunting during the molt. They gain extra weight beforehand to be prepared. But the extra fat probably also plays its role in the problem with overheating.
That “give me a hug” posture is the absolute cutest! Wonderful post, Maja!
Thank you, Kelly! And I agree. This posture is adorable!
Some waterfowl lose the ability to fly during molting! Definitely a stressful time for birds all around.
Yes, indeed! And it's fascinating how different the challenges for molting birds can be.
I usually fall on the side of "leave animals alone," but I gotta tell ya--I want to hug that penguin.
Great, fascinating read. Sometimes it's hard to remember penguins are birds lol
Yes, you're right! 😄 We tend to overlook the poor penguins. They deserve more fame in the bird community, if you ask me!
Another interesting bit of information that I wasn’t aware of. Always learning something new with your newsletters
Great, I'm glad to hear. Thank you, Aria!
