Kākāpō update: the first breeding season after four years has started!
They're mating! Here's how to stay up to date and how to help.
Hello there,
This is just a quick bonus post with an update on the kākāpō breeding season.
Breeding has officially started! They’re mating, and the first eggs have been laid.
Just a reminder why this is so exciting: Only 236 kākāpō are alive today, and these nocturnal, flightless, giant parrots from New Zealand breed only every two to four years. This breeding season might become the biggest on record.

Here’s how to follow updates:
Subscribe to the newsletter ‘Kākāpō Recovery Update.‘
Listen to the ‘Kākāpō Files II‘ podcast.
Here’s how to support the remarkable work of the Kākāpō Recovery Program:
We adopted Nora, the ‘marvelous matriarch,’ who was first discovered in 1980 and who has just mated and might become a mom once again this breeding season!
I can’t wait to see how she’s doing.
Have a wonderful rest of the week! All the best,
PS: Here, you can read my previous post on how we try to save the kākāpō from extinction (this post was published last summer, when 241 kākāpō were still alive):

Exciting, Maja! Do we know how many eggs in the clutch?
Thanks for making me aware of this beautiful species! I hope your adopted friend is doing well. Will definitely give those recovery resources a look. :)
